Family Reunification Visa in Portugal

Currently, this process is effectively suspended, pending updates from the Portuguese government on limits to numbers of visas that will be issued via the family reunification route. More will be known after summer 2025.

The Family Reunification Visa Portugal is designed for:

• Family members of legal residents in Portugal, including spouses, dependent children (biological or adopted), dependent parents, and siblings under 18.
• Individuals in a de facto union, and their dependent children or parents, provided they are financially supported by the couple.

• Applicants must first obtain authorization from the Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras (SEF). 
• Essential documents include:
  • a valid passport,
  • recent passport-sized photos,
  • travel insurance covering medical expenses,
  • a criminal record certificate from the country of origin and/or residence,
  • proof of accommodation and sufficient subsistence means in Portugal,
  • approval of family reunification by SEF, and, 
  • for those seeking to enforce their rights as a non-EU spouse of an EU citizen in Portugal, proof of familial relationship (birth or marriage certificate)​​.
