Useful Information

In Greece, the legal framework for addressing drink-driving offences is strict, with specific Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) limits set to ensure road safety.

The standard legal BAC limit for drivers is 0.05% or 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. For novice and professional drivers, a lower BAC limit of 0.2g/l is enforced, reflecting a more stringent approach towards those with less experience or those driving in a professional capacity.

Penalties for exceeding these limits are designed to deter drink-driving and promote responsible behaviour. These penalties vary depending on the BAC level at the time of the offence:

  • For a BAC level between 0.50 g/l to 0.80 g/l, the fine is €200.
  • If the BAC level is between 0.80 g/l to 1.10 g/l, the penalty includes a €700 fine and a driving ban of 90 days.
  • For BAC levels over 1.10 g/l, the consequences escalate to a €1,200 fine, a driving ban of 180 days, and a possible imprisonment of 2 months.
  • Repeat offences within two years, with a BAC over 1.10 g/l, attract even harsher penalties, including a €2,000 fine, a 5-year driving ban, and imprisonment of 6 months
